Dutch industry ran at a higher pace in September. The Nevi Purchasing Managers' Index rose from 53.8 in August to 55.6, the highest level in four months. A reading above 50 means growth. The output sub-indicator reached its highest level since January 2022, and the number of new orders also rose quickly. This was reported by Metaal Magazine and news agency ABM FN via CashCow. The index is compiled monthly by Nevi and S&P Global based on a survey of purchasing managers.
Where the growth comes from
According to sector economist Albert Jan Swart of ABN AMRO, industry is probably benefiting mainly from the "growing demand for chip machines and electrotechnical components". Demand for other machines, such as machines for the food industry and agriculture, is also recovering after a weak period, he says. The Netherlands benefits only to a limited extent directly from demand for defence equipment, although suppliers to German defence companies do notice something of it.
Swart also points out that part of the demand may be temporary. According to him, "hoarding as a result of the war with Iran" plays a part. That fits the picture from earlier months: in August, delivery times for purchased materials were already getting longer due to disruptions in the Middle East, and purchasing prices rose, reports Trading Economics based on S&P Global figures.
What does this mean for machine builders?
More orders and more output mean that machines have to be finished sooner and that existing lines run harder. That affects the parts that move with every motion: the cable carrier, the cables inside it and the entries in the cabinet. Three points to watch now:
- Fix the cable carrier early. A carrier that is only chosen at the end of the design has to fit in the space that is left. With the Cable carrier configurator you determine a suitable type based on cables, stroke and installation space. A specialist checks the result free of charge. If you are building for the chip industry or the food industry, also see semiconductors and electronics or packaging and food.
- Order carrier and cables as one unit. A carrier assembled to length, with the flexible cables inside and the strain relief fitted, saves assembly hours in a busy workshop.
- Allow for lead times. If lead times in the supply chain get longer, also plan the parts you do not hold in stock yourself. For recurring machines, put the carriers, cables and entries on a fixed list in My Wisman.
And the machines that are now running harder?
A line that makes more strokes per day wears out its cable carriers and cables faster. Wear usually announces itself: more noise, more sag, abrasion marks on the cables. In the Carrier check you can go through these points in a few minutes. How to assess sag is explained in cable carrier sag. If you want a check of all carriers in an installation, there is the maintenance and inspection service. If you need a replacement part, you can find it via parts.
