Maeslantkering stainless steel cable carrier overhaul: service life extended

The Maeslantkering is a vital link in the Dutch flood defences and must function perfectly at all times. Its stainless steel cable carrier, an essential part of the movement mechanism, is continuously exposed to a particularly aggressive environment: constant moisture, the corrosive effect of salt water and the dynamic loads that occur during movement. After years of loyal service, the cable carrier began to show signs of wear. Full replacement seemed the obvious choice, but it would have been a major operation with considerable costs and a potentially long interruption to the barrier's functionality. The challenge was therefore to guarantee the reliability of the cable management without the drawbacks of a completely new build.

Working closely with Hollandia Services, Wisman Techniek opted for a smart and sustainable approach. Instead of completely replacing the existing stainless steel cable carrier from Tsubaki Kabelschlepp GmbH, we decided on a thorough overhaul. This meant fully dismantling the existing energy chain, followed by a detailed inspection of every individual part. We cleaned the cable carrier thoroughly, checked all moving parts for wear and replaced or repaired components where necessary, such as the pins, holes and driver arms that are crucial for smooth operation. Our technicians optimised the structure and functionality to maximise resistance to the aggressive environmental factors and extend the service life. Wisman Techniek's expertise in Tsubaki Kabelschlepp products, built up since 1975, was invaluable here.

Thanks to this careful overhaul, the service life of the stainless steel cable carrier has been significantly extended, without compromising on the maximum reliability and safety that are essential for the Maeslantkering. The installation is once again working optimally, as good as new, but with a much smaller ecological footprint and more efficient use of resources than a full replacement. This sustainable solution minimises the impact on the operation of the Maeslantkering and contributes to future-proof infrastructure. Wisman Techniek shows that overhaul and optimisation can be an excellent alternative to new build, especially for complex and critical installations.
