German output up, machine building down

German industrial output in September: +0.7%, but machine building fell 6.5%. Car makers are ramping up. Read what to check when a line restarts.

German output up, machine building down

German industry produced 0.7 percent more in September than in August. That is reported by the German statistics office Destatis on 6 November, also covered by Mittelstand-Nachrichten. The picture varies widely by sector. The car industry produced 17.1 percent more, while machine building produced 6.5 percent less.

What Destatis reports

The figures are provisional and adjusted for season and working days. Compared with September 2025, production was 0.4 percent higher. Growth in August has been revised from 2.0 to 1.0 percent. Over the third quarter as a whole, production was 0.4 percent lower than in the second quarter.

The strong rise in the car industry follows weak months. According to Destatis, production changeovers and factory holidays depressed the figures in the preceding months. The pharmaceutical industry grew by 8.0 percent. Machine building fell by 6.5 percent, after growth of 5.8 percent in August. Production of capital goods as a whole rose by 3.0 percent.

Earlier this week, the VDMA reported 14 percent more orders for German machine building. So orders are rising, but production is not yet following. Those orders will only be built in the coming months.

What does this mean for your machines?

A line that goes back to full speed after a long stop or a changeover demands more of its moving parts than a line that runs steadily. After weeks of downtime, dirt may have hardened, cables in the carrier may have shifted, and end stops or guide channels are sometimes positioned slightly differently after work on the machine. Three points before you increase the speed again:

  • First let the machine make a full stroke slowly. Check whether the cable carrier runs freely in both end positions, is not pulled taut anywhere and does not run into the channel or a bracket.
  • Check the signals. More noise, sagging, chafe marks on the cables or a broken crossbar are often the first signs of wear. The Carrier check takes you through these points in a few minutes, and in the knowledge base you can read how to recognise wear on a cable carrier.
  • Plan replacement in the next stop. If you see wear, do not wait until the carrier breaks while the orders are coming in. Why you should look well before the stop is explained in Short maintenance window? Inspect well before the stop.
