Producer prices of Dutch industry in September were 8.3 percent higher than a year earlier. In August the figure was 6.9 percent. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported this on 30 October in the release Manufacturing output prices nearly 8 percent higher in September. Compared with August, prices rose by 1.3 percent.
What CBS measures
Producer prices are the prices Dutch manufacturers charge for their products, in the Netherlands and for export. On the export market, prices in September rose by 1.7 percent compared with August, on the domestic market by 0.9 percent. The index (2021 = 100) came in at 128.9, compared with 127.2 in August.
Early this year, prices were still below the level of a year earlier: in January and February the difference was minus 2.5 and minus 2.4 percent. Since March there has been an increase every month.
Oil pushes prices up
According to CBS, producer prices generally follow the oil price. A barrel of crude oil cost almost 87 euros in September, 53 percent more than a year earlier. CBS attributes the rise since March to the geopolitical situation in the Middle East.
It varies widely by sector:
| Sector | Price change September, year on year |
|---|---|
| Petroleum products | +75,4% |
| Chemical products | +14,9% |
| Rubber and plastics | +9,1% |
| Metal products | +4,5% |
| Machines | +1,2% |
| Electronics | +0,7% |
| Cars | -0,4% |
| Food products | -4,1% |
According to CBS, prices in the chemical sector often lag behind the oil price.
What does this mean for your purchasing?
For anyone building or maintaining machines, two lines stand out: rubber and plastics (+9.1 percent) and metal products (+4.5 percent). Many parts for cable management are made of plastic or steel, and cables have a plastic jacket around a copper core. How strongly a price rise in the chain carries through to a specific part differs by product and by manufacturer. A few points help to keep control:
- Ask for an up-to-date quote. A price from months ago is no longer a good basis for a budget. A quote request gives you a price that applies now.
- Calculate the copper surcharge separately. With cables, part of the price depends on the copper price. On the series pages of our flexible cables you can see today's copper surcharge. How it works is explained in copper surcharge for cables.
- Repair where possible. Replacing a worn section of a cable carrier takes less material than a complete new carrier. Read the trade-off in repair or replace a cable carrier.
