Cables by application

Start with the movement, then the cable.

Which cable you need depends on what it does and how it moves. Choose your application below: robot, servo motor, cable carrier or data. Each page shows the matching TRAXLINE series, with the limits from the data.

Every cable choice starts with the same four questions: how does the cable move, how often, how far and what does it carry.

Movement: does the cable bend in one plane, as in a cable carrier, or does it also twist around its own axis, as on a robot arm? The latter is torsion, and the TRAXLINE series are not specified for it.

Number and distance: the number of movement cycles and the travel distance determine the class. TRAXLINE ranges from 2 million cycles and 25 m in class 200 to 10 million cycles and 1000 m in class 1000.

Content: power, control current, signals, bus or light. That determines the cable type and whether you need shielding. The environment then determines the jacket: PVC, PUR or TPE.

Many machines combine applications. A robot on a linear axis has a dress pack on the arm and a cable carrier on the axis; a servo axis has power, feedback and often a bus cable in the same carrier. Then choose the right type and class per cable, and lay out the carrier with a separator between power and signal.

We choose cables and carrier together, because the thickest cable determines the radius and the outer diameters the inner size. That way everything fits first time, and if you wish we deliver the whole system fully assembled from Ruurlo.

Avoid

Five mistakes that cost cables

  1. 01A fixed cable in a moving application

An installation cable is not made to bend: cores break, the jacket tears.

  2. 02A cable carrier cable on the robot arm

Bending in one plane is a different load than torsion around the wrist.

  3. 03No shielding on a drive

Motor and encoder cables on a frequency or servo drive should be shielded.

  4. 04The heaviest class just to be safe

The lightest class that is sure to fit is enough. The cable finder puts it at the top.

  5. 05Laid crossed or twisted

Lay straight, without torsion, with strain relief at both ends.
